Three walls of my sewing room...on the fourth is a large closet and an additional bulletin board. I'll eventually remove the white paper labels that are tucked in the interior of the boxes once I get used to the location of their contents. Woolens and project trays are kept in the lower cabinets.

When I was sorting my fabrics into the containers, I found this striped wool doubleknit cut out into a cardigan coat. I recut it with my 1960 pattern's cardigan but then I didn't have any fabric for the bands. My solution was to find a heathered navy blue doubleknit that was the same type of fabric though not a color that appeared in the wide stripes. I used it for the sleeve cuffs, the pockets and the front bands and now it's finally done...after laying "dormant" for about twenty years. Back then it wouldn't have mattered to me that the lightest stripe was around the hip....today I'd have reversed those colors and had the lightest at the shoulder, darkest at the hip.

This old red sweater coat was my inspiration for the rolled front bands. I haven't discarded it since I think I'll recut it eventually to raise the armscye and narrow the body. The drawing shows you more clearly how this might look, while the striped cardigan has a wider rolled band applied to the left front side. I ran out of time before my printing deadline and the holidays, so I just cut one band like I had suggested in the newsletter and machine basted it in place on a cardigan I had already made to be certain my instructions for the redesign would be clear and easy to accomplish. You can see how nicely it rolls around the left side of the neckline. Using garments that are already made up is a great way to design new details without having to make an entire "muslin."
